Impact wrench marketing is the least honest corner of the tool industry. Two numbers matter, manufacturers usually shout the flattering one, and buyers end up disappointed.
The tools themselves are genuinely good. A modern brushless cordless impact wrench does work that shop air lines struggled with a generation ago. But the number on the box is not the number you get, and the specs that decide whether you enjoy owning the tool — its length, its weight, the battery you feed it — never make the headline.

Breakaway vs fastening torque
Fastening torque is how hard the tool can tighten a fastener. Breakaway (nut-busting) torque is how hard it can loosen a stuck one, measured with sustained hammering. Breakaway numbers are always higher and are what gets printed in big letters.
For most users, breakaway is the number that matters — you are removing rusted bolts, not torquing new ones to spec. But it is measured under ideal lab conditions with a fresh, full battery, so treat the printed figure as a ceiling you will rarely see.
Picture how that ceiling gets set: a cool, fully charged pack, a rig that lets the tool hammer for as long as it likes, no extension, no wobble, no rust. Your bolt is seized, on the end of a six-inch extension, on a half-drained pack still warm from the last job. Those losses stack, which is why a 1,000 ft-lb tool sometimes will not move what a 700 ft-lb tool moved yesterday.
Watch the units too. Newton-metre figures are roughly 1.36 times the same torque in ft-lbs, so a listing shouting 1,200 Nm is claiming about 885 ft-lbs, and sellers mix the two on purpose. Drive size and class: where the money goes
Class tells you what a tool can do. Drive size tells you which sockets fit. They correlate, but they are not the same decision.

Two things to read out of that table. The jump from compact to mid-torque is the biggest real gain in the range, while the jump from mid to high-torque buys a narrow band of extra-stubborn fasteners at a serious cost in length and weight. And drive size is a socket decision as much as a power one — if you only own one impact wrench, 1/2 inch matches the impact sockets you can buy anywhere.
Mid-torque is the right answer for most people
High-torque wrenches are heavy, long and awkward in engine bays. Mid-torque models deliver enough to break almost any automotive fastener while remaining controllable and light. Unless you work on trucks or heavy equipment, mid-torque is the buy.
That is a geometry argument more than a power one. High-torque tools are usually several inches longer nose to tail and noticeably heavier, and both matter far more than the spec sheet when you are reaching over a fender or lying under a car. A tool that will not fit the gap delivers zero foot-pounds.
Who should skip it? If your only job is seasonal tyre swaps on nuts that were properly torqued, a compact is lighter and cheaper and enough. If you work on trucks, trailers or farm equipment that lives outdoors and rusts, buy high-torque and accept the bulk — you want the hammer mass.

A torque figure far above every established brand at half the price is the tell, not the bargain.
In the middle, where most people should shop, the deciding factor is not the tool — it is the battery platform. A competent brushless mid-torque wrench on a system with widely available high-output packs beats a nominally stronger tool from a brand you cannot buy a spare battery for.
At the top you pay for control and durability rather than output: torque settings that repeat, a bolt-removal mode that behaves, a ring anvil, better sealing, and heat management that keeps the tool working instead of throttling after four bolts. Worth it if you undo bolts weekly, luxury if you do it twice a year.
How to weigh the criteria
When two tools look similar on paper, decide in this order:

Torque sticks cap the peak well enough for production tyre work, but they are a rate limiter, not a calibrated tool.
One more habit: use the shortest socket and extension that reaches, because every extension and universal joint twists instead of passing energy on, and keep the socket square on the fastener. A wrench hammering at an angle rounds hex corners fast, and a rounded nut turns five minutes into an hour.
Battery matters here more than anywhere
Impact wrenches pull enormous current. On a small pack, a high-torque wrench will underperform badly and heat up. Run high-output or FlexVolt-class packs if you want the tool to do what the box says.
The load arrives in one-second bursts, over and over. Small packs sag under it, and voltage sag reads out directly as lost torque and slower hammering.
